LOWER TOWNSHIP POLICE RELEASE:
COURT HOUSE — On Thursday, Sept. 17, Lower Township Police Officers transported John Lawless, who faces Death By Auto charges from a Sept. 12 head-on motor vehicle accident that took the life of Lower Township resident, Fred Shelton. Lawless was taken from Atlantic Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City to the Lower Township Police Department for processing.
Lawless had been under guard by Lower Township Police Officers at the hospital since Saturday, Sept. 12.
Sherri Shelton and her 13-year-old daughter, Brittany, remain hospitalized with injuries sustained in the accident.
Lawless was processed including fingerprints and mug shots at the Lower Township Police Department on the following criminal/motor vehicle charges:
• One (1) count of Death by Auto
(2nd Degree crime)
• Two (2) counts of Assault with a Motor Vehicle
• Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated
• Reckless Driving
• Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Driver’s License
• Failure to Maintain a Single Lane
Lower Township Police notified officials at the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department of Lawless’ discharge and advised them of his medical condition before transporting Lawless to the Cape May County Correctional Center where he is being held on $100,000 cash bail.
