STONE HARBOR- Based on a report from Borough Hall to the Police Department concerning missing funds from the Clerk’s Office, the Stone Harbor Police Department along with the assistance of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office conducted a two month investigation. Subsequent to that investigation, Deputy Clerk Lisa Stefankiewicz, 50, was charged on Friday Sept. 13 with the following: Official misconduct, a crime of the second degree, theft by failure to make required disposition, a crime of the third degree, and tampering with public records, a disorderly persons offense. After being served, Stefankiewicz was released on her own recognizance.
During the investigation the Borough conducted an audit of the Borough’s books and cash receipts. That audit revealed missing cash funds exceeding $500.00 The theft charges stemmed from cash being taken in for sailcraft permits, business registrations, and parking permits and not being deposited to the Borough. Case investigated by Detective David Hartzell and DSG Christopher Palmer.
