COLD SPRING — An investigation has been initiated regarding a crash on the Garden State Parkway that left a box truck overturned at milepost .7 on Sun., April 30.

While the cause of the accident is being investigated by troopers at the Bass River station, the contents of the truck that spilled out when the truck overturned now has the DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife asking questions.
Early morning that Sunday, the truck was traveling north on the Parkway when, for unknown reasons, it lost control and overturned. The contents of the truck, lobster and horseshoe crab spilled onto the highway.

“It is illegal to harvest horseshoe crabs in New Jersey,” said Lawrence Hajna, a Fish and Wildlife spokesperson.
New Jersey lawmakers banned all fishing for horseshoe crabs in 2008. The ban is designed to help the red knot, a migratory shorebird that feeds on the crabs’ eggs along the shores of the Delaware Bay.
The ban is opposed by fishermen who harvest horseshoe crabs to use as bait.
Hajna said the Fish and Wildlife would investigate the circumstances, since harvesting horseshoe crab is unlawful.
Troopers at the Bass River station were unable to provide any information on who owned the truck or if any tickets were issued in the crash citing the ongoing investigation.
