WILDWOOD – Attorney Sam Lashman, co-defendant of Gary DeMarzo, has made a formal request of the State of New Jersey’s Division of Criminal Justice and the Middle Township police chief regarding Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor. It is a formal request for investigation of the prosecutor alleging that he may have used county property for his own personal use and benefit.
Lashman has sued Taylor personally for malicious prosecution, stemming from a case brought against himself and DeMarzo, by the prosecutor. The case has been dismissed by several courts but recently Taylor, in his capacity as prosecutor, appealed to the New Jersey Supreme Court to overrule those courts.
At the heart of the matter is a $348 legal bill of Lashman’s when DeMarzo was mayor of Wildwood. Taylor, in his turn, has sued Lashman for defamation. Lashman states that there is reason to believe that Taylor has used county property in pursuing his lawsuit including using county mailing facilities.
“He shouldn’t be using it,” Lashman said. “County property is not for personal use. I have not filed a formal complaint; I would just like Police Chief Christopher Leusner or the state officials to provide an explanation, or is it something else. That’s all.”
The Herald confirmed that the letter of request arrived at the Middle Township Police Department June 17. Leusner said he had no comment on the matter and added that he answered to the office of the Prosecutor and therefore it would not be appropriate for him to investigate.
The suits filed by Lashman and Taylor against each other are winding their way through the court system.
