Murder Trial Set
MAYS LANDING — It’s been over three years since a Welsh tourist was murdered outside an Atlantic County nightclub. After numerous delays, his accused killer has finally received a trial date.
Laverne Ritch, a swimming coach from Cardiff, Wales was vacationing with friends on Aug. 12, 2007, when he attempted to break up a fight outside Maynard’s Café in Margate.
According to authorities, the fight was between Robert Davies, of the 700 block of New York Avenue in North Wildwood, and another man. When Ritch intervened, Davies allegedly stabbed Ritch once in the chest before fleeing.
Ritch, 37 at the time, was pronounced dead at the hospital, shortly after the stabbing.
Davies, 49, was arrested 11 days after the stabbing. He was then indicted on Aug. 8, 2008, a year after the incident. His charges included murder, aggravated manslaughter, manslaughter and various weapons offenses.
According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, Davies’ trial is scheduled for Jan. 24 before Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury in Courtroom 6.
