COURT HOUSE — The Superior Court in Atlantic and Cape May counties seeks young people to serve on the Juvenile Conference Committees (JCC). Young people can play a valuable role in the juvenile justice process as volunteers on JCC boards.
A JCC board is composed of six to nine citizen volunteers appointed by a family division judge to hear and decide matters involving alleged juvenile offenders. The juvenile, parent(s) and or guardian(s) and complainant are invited to discuss the offense and related matters with the committee in a confidential setting.
The JCC considers the facts and makes recommendations to the judge for a resolution that would aid in the juvenile’s rehabilitation.
The program is designed to divert juveniles charged with a first or second minor offense to their local JCC, which acts as a community-based arm of the family court. The JCC hears matters involving shoplifting, simple assault, attempted theft or theft, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, receiving stolen property and disorderly persons offenses.
CC boards meet monthly for two hours in municipalities in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Youth must be between the ages of 14 and 18. Parental consent is required.
Program volunteers are required to complete mandatory program-specific training.
Interested youth can call (609) 343-2298.
