SEA ISLE CITY– Jonathan Ahlum, 31 of Court House was arrested by the Sea Isle City Police Department after a combined Investigation with the United States Post Office, Office of Inspector General.
Ahlum was allegedly stealing money over several months while working as a sales associate for the Post Office in Sea Isle City.
Ahlum is charged with Official Misconduct, Pattern of Official Misconduct and Theft.
Ahlum was transported to the Cape May County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail set by Judge Vincent J. Morrison.
Colleen Ahlum, mother of Jonathan Ahlum, told the Herald her version of the story on Wed., Nov. 24.
According to her, Jonathan Ahlum was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for six years, and had never been in trouble with the law in that period.
On Sept. 26, Ahlum was elected vice president of the Cape May County chapter of the postal workers’ union.
Two days afterward, postal inspectors interviewed him ‘regarding trouble with the postmaster.”
At that time, he told the inspectors he wanted an attorney, and secured one from the firm of Cooper Levinson. A scheduled meeting was set Dec. 1 between Ahlum, his attorney and inspectors.
On Tue., Nov. 23, Ahlum received a call to go to Sea Isle City Police Department, which he did, accompanied by his mother and wife.
Shortly thereafter, a lieutenant informed Colleen Ahlum that her son was being arrested, that he was being taken to Cape May County Correctional Center with a bail of $100,000.
“How could the bail be $100,000?” asked Ahlum, since no amount of money was mentioned to her.
