County Sheriff Has LoJack System

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CAPE MAY COUNTY SHERIFF:
Cape May Court House – Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced that the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office is equipping and training officers to use the LoJack System. This is a system that allows the officers to track stolen motor vehicles.
A vehicle is stolen every 28.8 seconds in the United States. Last year alone, 1.1 million vehicles were stolen across the country. Depending upon where you live and what make and model you drive, you may be at risk.
Sheriff Schaffer explains how the system works, “With the LoJack System, when a vehicle theft is reported to the police, a routine entry into the state police crime computer results in a match of the LoJack System’s unique code against the state VIN database. This automatically activates the LoJack Unit in a vehicle, which emits an inaudible signal. Law enforcement authorities who are equipped with LoJack Police Tracking Computers—in their sheriff’s cars and aviation units—are always listening for a LoJack signal. Sheriff Officers use the LoJack Police Tracking Computers to track and recover your stolen LoJack-equipped vehicle.”
Ninety percent of all stolen vehicles equipped with the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System have been recovered, many within a few hours.
The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office is now installing the LoJack system in five of the fleet’s vehicles. This equipment and installation has been donated free of charge by the company.
Sheriff Schaffer said, “This is a win for our taxpayers and our efforts to enhance the crime fighting ability of the Sheriff Officers. At no cost, we obtain state of the art equipment to supplement our vehicles that travel the county roadways everyday enabling the officers to pick up signals of stolen vehicles and apprehend the criminal.”
The training and units were installed in the Sheriff Officer’s vehicles on June 4th at the Cape May County Police Academy and are activated and currently being used as a new crime fighting tool.
