County Prosecutor to Update Megan’s Law Notification List

COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office is seeking to update its current list of schools and community organizations within the county that are eligible by law to receive formal notifications of sex offenders in the community. Since 1994, State legislation known as Megan’s Law has allowed the law enforcement agencies of New Jersey to identify sex offenders in their communities and provide notification of their whereabouts to members of the public. The Megan’s Law Unit of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office currently monitors almost 300 registered sex offenders that reside within Cape May County. All public, private and parochial educational institutions up through grade 12, licensed daycare centers and licensed summer camps are automatically eligible. Other community organizations potentially eligible to receive notifications are those groups, agencies and organizations that own or operate an establishment where children gather under their care, or where the organization cares for women.
Prosecutor Taylor is asking that all eligible and potentially eligible schools, daycare facilities, camps, and other community organizations visit the Cape May County Prosecutor’s website at www.cmcpros.net to obtain an application. You can also contact his office , Megan’s Law Unit, via phone 609-465-1135 or fax 609-465-1347 to request a notification application. Please include your complete address and a telephone number, along with a contact person’s name when making your request in this way. Applications will then be mailed out. This will allow the Megan’s Law Unit to have the most current information on file.
