COURT HOUSE – The Dec. 9 death of a 45-year-old inmate at Cape May County Correctional Center is being investigated by the County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit.
A Dec. 10 joint release by County Prosecutor Robert Taylor and Sheriff Gary Schaffer reported the death of John McElroy.
It stated, “Correctional officers were alerted by other inmates that…McElroy was in medical distress and unresponsive while in the common area of the correctional facility known as the “day room.”
“Correctional Officers responded and immediately began lifesaving efforts which included performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator prior to McElroy being transported to Cape Regional Medical Center.”
McElroy was incarcerated since Aug. 15 on a contempt charge out of Lower Township, according to the jail’s website.
The investigation is ongoing by the Major Crimes Unit.
