Child Support Sweep Nets 23 Arrests, $10K

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — A couple dozen deadbeat parents in Cape May County were rounded up recently as part of a statewide bi-annual Child Support Warrant Sweep for the fiscal year 2010, Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced on Mon., June 28.
“Our Sheriff’s Officers attempted to serve 108 warrants over this three day period of time resulting in 23 arrests and the collection of $10,195 in back support payments,” he said.
“The goal of the three-day intensive Non Support Sweep is to apprehend non-custodial parents who have failed to pay their court-ordered child support,” state Sheriff’s Association President Frank J. Provenzano said. “Additional targets included parents who have failed to appear at court hearings to establish a child support order or order for medical support.”
“Our 21 County Sheriffs are dedicated to making sure the needs of our children are met. It is imperative for the well-being of the children that law enforcement is vigilant in enforcing these child support orders,” said Provenzano, Somerset County sheriff.
“The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office is committed to serving these non-support warrants as well as apprehending criminal violators as we continue to use the latest technology to improve our Warrants and Identification Unit, whose job is to track down and apprehend these persons. I want to commend all the officers involved for an outstanding effort last week,” said Schaffer.
“Even as we make improvements to our Warrants and and Identification Units and step up enforcement, the key to even greater success is public involvement and information supplied to us through our various tip lines,” the Sheriff added. “I encourage the public to be as proactive as possible with their tips. I can assure you that every tip is actively followed up and most times eventually lead to the apprehension of the wanted person.”
The sweep is hosted in cooperation with the New Jersey Office of Child Support Services (OCSS). The OCSS has commended both the Sheriffs’ Association and the Judiciary for collaboratively supporting the Sheriffs’ final procedures and data report for the sweep. Sheriff’s Officers from statewide Sheriffs’ Offices, with assistance from other agencies, canvassed the state in search of offenders over the course of the three-day sweep.
A total of 965 warrants were served and out of an outstanding $13.7 million owed, approximately $267,883 was collected.
