Cape May Police Warn of Grandparent Scam

By Press Release

CAPE MAY- Cape May Police Department reports an investigation involving what has become known across the nation as the “Grandparent Scam”.
Police received a call on Nov. 10 at 2:38 PM from a local resident who reported being defrauded out of over $2,000. The victim, believing a grandchild was incarcerated and needed bail money, eventually sent the money through Western Union after speaking with a person impersonating the grandchild, and a brief conversation with another person impersonating the attorney and the secretary.
After making the initial transfer the victim became suspicious and contacted Cape May Police Department when a second request for additional money was received.
The investigation is continuing and the Cape May Police Department would like to stress to grandparents receiving calls from grandchildren requesting money for bail or other financial emergency (car broke down, robbed, car accident, customs fees, etc.) to confirm the caller’s identity and confirm the information with another trusted source.
Investigating officers are Sgt. Thomas Connelly and Detective Sergeant Anthony Marino.
