AVALON – The Avalon Police Department has charged an Avalon resident with burglary and theft after he allegedly entered a parked motor vehicle and stole a woman’s purse which contained cash and credit cards.
On July 12, the victim stated she parked her vehicle in the 200 block of 21st Street overnight, leaving the doors unlocked. After receiving an alert from her bank that several suspicious transactions were made on her accounts, she discovered the theft and contacted police.
Shawn P. Russell, 25, was observed on surveillance video using the stolen credit cards to purchase several hundred dollars of cigarettes at a local convenience store. He was charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, and credit card theft.
A warrant was authorized by Judge George Neidig of the Avalon Municipal Court. Russell was remanded to the Cape May County Correctional Facility on $25,000 cash bail. The case was investigated by Patrolman Gregory Armstrong and will be reviewed by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
