AVALON — Avalon Police have charged a 24-year old Philadelphia man with stealing a bicycle following an incident at a local convenience store earlier this month.
On Thurs., Aug. 12, Avalon Police Patrolman Matthew Sykes was conducting a bicycle theft sting operation at a Wawa convenience store located in the 2700 block of Ocean Drive.
At approximately 1:14 a.m., Sykes was observing the “bait” bicycle when he noticed that another bicycle was being stolen from the bike rack. Patrolman Michael Paluch and Special Officer Steven Bowers stopped the stolen bike at 27th Street and Dune Drive.
Police identified the suspect as Christopher Garzone of Philadelphia. Garzone was charged with
theft, no bike light, and no audible device.
The Avalon Police Department will continue to arrest and charge individuals who take bicycles that do not belong to them. Police remind residents and visitors that bicycle thefts are crimes of opportunity, and bikes should be locked, or kept in secure buildings when not in use.
Avalon Police have also begun a free, voluntary bicycle registration program. To register your bicycle with the Avalon Police Department, visit the Avalon Public Safety Building at 31st Street and Dune Drive.
