MAYS LANDING – An Atlantic City man, Omar Curry, was indicted for murder May 6 for killing a man last January, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced in a release.
On Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at approximately 8:30 p.m., Atlantic City Police were alerted of shots fired by the City’s Shot Spotter gunfire detection software. Police responded to the scene near the intersection of Texas and Arctic Avenues and discovered a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as Nelson Viera, 32, of Atlantic City, formerly of Woodbine. Viera was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
An autopsy completed by the State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Viera’s death a homicide.
On August 26, 2014 Curry, 25, of Atlantic City, N.J. was arrested in the 800 block of North Virginia Avenue as a result of an investigation conducted by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit in conjunction with the Atlantic City Police Department.
Curry was charged with homicide by knowingly causing the death of Viera, a crime of the first degree, knowingly possessing a firearm with the purpose to use it unlawfully against the person of another, a crime of the second degree, knowingly possessing a handgun without first having obtained a permit, a crime of the second degree and felony possession of weapon, a crime of the second degree.
Curry was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $1,000,000 full cash bail set by Superior Court Judge James P. Savio.
Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Curry for the crimes of Murder, first degree, unlawful possession of a firearm, a crime of the second degree and unlawful possession of a weapon, a crime of the second degree A conviction for murder carries a potential penalty of incarceration in New Jersey State prison for 30 years to life and is covered by the No Early Release Act (N.E.R.A).
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy represented the state in the matter.
This charge is merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. In all criminal cases, a charged defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
