All Rise! It’s Mock Trial Time: Student Lawyers Match Wits in Court

COURT HOUSE – It was freezing outside, but the atmosphere was hot in Courtrooms A and B of Cape May County Superior Court Jan. 6, the first night of this year’s Cape May County High School Mock Trial Competition. Middle Township and Lower Cape May Regional teams were victorious in the first round.
The contests will continue every Tuesday and Thursday until Jan. 22.
Student legal teams from Cape May County Technical High School, Wildwood Catholic High School, Middle Township High School and Lower Cape May Regional High School will face off in a fictional case centered around personal injury that occurred on a school-sponsored trip.
The event is sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation in cooperation with the Cape May County Bar Association and Cape May County Superior Court.
Participating schools include Cape May County Technical High School (Teacher Coach – Matthew Pleasants; Attorney Coach – Brian McEwing, Esq.), Lower Cape May Regional High School (Teacher Coaches – Thomas R. Higgins and Alice Barnes-Vasser; Attorney Coach – Barbara Bakely-Marino, Esq.), Middle Township High School (Teacher Coach – Martina Trapani; Attorney Coach – Howard Trout, Esq.) and Wildwood Catholic High School (Teacher Coach-Theresa Murphy and Attorney Coach – Chris Gillin Schwartz, Esq.).
The contests are held in Cape May County Superior Court, 9 N. Main St., Court House. The public is invited to attend.
