OCEAN CITY — The theft of a backpack from the Eighth Street beach July 16 was quickly foiled when an alert parking enforcement officer heard the description of the suspect.
According to a release, Boardwalk police officers were told by a witness that a theft of a backpack had taken place about 11:57 a.m. from the Eighth Street beach. The witness described the suspect as a white male who wore a red shirt in his mid 20s, with white shorts and black baseball cap and black boots.
The suspect was last seen running toward the boardwalk in the Seventh Street vicinity.
That information was broadcast to all police personnel on duty.
Parking Officer Joyce Pettit, who had been monitoring the radio, spotted a suspect who fit the description at Eighth Street and Wesley Avenue shortly after the alert was broadcast.
She notified other officers via radio of his location. Police arrived at the location and took the suspect into custody. A witness identified him as the same person who had allegedly taken the backpack from the beach.
The backpack was recovered by police and returned to the victim.
Arrested for theft was Jose E. Colonetti, 28, of Ocean City.
He was processed and released on a summons.
