70-Year-Old Murder of Wildwood Crest Woman Remains Unsolved

By Rick Racela

STATE COLLEGE, PA – Seventy years ago today, March 28, 1940, a seventeen year-old woman’s life was cut short after returning back to Penn State after Easter break.
According to old newspaper stories from the 1940s, Wildwood Crest native Rachel Taylor was seen getting into her car at her dorm around 1:30 a.m.
Five hours later, she was found by a janitor nearly naked, battered and lifeless.
Over the years many suspects were identified.
A Penn State researcher became curious of the case last fall, and contacted the Pennsylvania State Police with questions about the 70 year-old case.
Trooper David Aiello is resurfacing the dusty files to find out which questions still remain unanswered. He enjoys a challenge and is looking into it as time permits.
Even though he admits that the odds of catching the killer still alive are slim, the investigative techniques from that time were different and a mountain of material still exists today.
