County To Begin Drainage And Roadway Improvement Project In North Wildwood

By Lenora Boninfante

Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster announced today that work is expected to begin on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 on drainage and roadway improvements to a portion of New Jersey Avenue in the City of North Wildwood. Foster said, “The work involves replacing old and deteriorated storm drain pipes at several intersections along New Jersey Avenue. The drainage improvements are scheduled for 13th Street and 21st Street through 25th Street intersections. The drainage improvements are expected to be completed by Memorial Day weekend 2011.
Due to the nature of work, New Jersey Avenue traffic will be detoured away from the work zone. When New Jersey Avenue is closed for construction operations, traffic will be detoured to either New York Avenue to the west or Central Avenue to the east beginning at 26th Street as motorists enter North Wildwood from Wildwood.
Foster added, “The depth of storm drain pipe installation prevents the contractor from maintaining traffic on New Jersey Avenue while performing their construction operations.”
Local businesses within the construction zone are open and access to their facilities will be from the side streets. For the weekends, weather permitting, the trenches in New Jersey Avenue will be patched and the roadway will be open to traffic.
The drainage work will extend into the sidewalks at several locations. Therefore curbs, sidewalks and curb ramps at intersections are slated to be replaced. This work will be performed immediately after the pipe work has been completed. Once all drainage and concrete work has been completed, the roadway will be resurfaced.
The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders awarded Perna Finnigan, Inc. of Vineland, NJ, a $548,474 construction contract for Drainage and Roadway Improvements on New Jersey Avenue in the North Wildwood. The project is funded solely by the County of Cape May.
The drainage upgrades were requested by the City of North Wildwood to complement the extensive infrastructure improvements the City has made. The project was designed by the Cape May County Engineer’s Office and construction oversight will be provided by County personnel.
