Improvements to New Jersey Avenue (County Road No. 621) from Cresse Avenue to Youngs Avenue in the City of Wildwood are currently underway. The more than $1.9 Million construction project was awarded to South State, Inc. by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
The project includes the removal and replacement of deteriorated, broken or out-of-grade sections of concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveway aprons. All southbound traffic is being detoured to Park Boulevard and northbound traffic is reduced to one lane. Also, South State is removing the asphalt and concrete pavement on about 26 feet. The excavation work starts at Youngs Avenue and progresses southward. Each three block section is expected to take about one week to complete.
Once the work progresses to Rio Grande Avenue, the construction operation will be turned around and proceed northward from Rio Grande Avenue towards Youngs Avenue. All northbound traffic will be detoured to Pacific Avenue from Rio Grande Avenue to Schellenger Avenue and one lane of southbound traffic will be reintroduced onto New Jersey Avenue.
Once the section of New Jersey Avenue between Rio Grande Avenue and Youngs Avenue is completed to where traffic is passable, the construction operation will begin at Rio Grande Avenue and proceed southward to Cresse Avenue. When working on this section, all southbound traffic will be detoured to Park Boulevard from Rio Grande Avenue to Heather Avenue and the northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane. Once the work reaches Cresse Avenue, the construction operation will be turned around and proceed northward from Cresse Avenue to Rio Grande Avenue.
Upon completing this last phase of work, South State will immediately proceed to place the final 2-inch thick surface course over the entire length of the project. New pavement stripes and pavement markings will also be installed.
Additionally, storm drainage improvements are currently being performed on New Jersey Avenue by RTW Construction, Inc. of Southampton, NJ under a nearly $445,000 contract with the County.
Concurrently with the resurfacing improvement project, the traffic signals along New Jersey Avenue are to be upgraded to latest standards. Code compliant handicap curb ramps at the corners of every intersection will be constructed throughout the project.
Rio Grande Avenue intersection will be passable for east/west traffic at all times. Detour signs will be erected to direct traffic around the section of New Jersey Avenue closed for construction. The road closures will be limited to the shortest durations possible.
When the project is completed, the newly improved New Jersey Avenue will be restriped to provide for two travel lanes in each direction and one parking lane along northbound travel lanes.
Depending on weather, the resurfacing project is to be expected to be completed around Memorial Day weekend.
This resurfacing project is funded with federal funds that were approved through South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization and New Jersey Department of Transportation. The project was designed by the Cape May County Engineer’s Office.
