COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced today that the Cape May County Correctional Center is the first facility in the country to offer visits of inmates from any location in the world through the use of the internet. After successfully watching the development of a beta test site in Washoe County, Reno, Nevada; Cape May County’s program was officially launched on May 1, 2011- making it the first in the country.
Sheriff Schaffer said that he first began exploring the possibility of visits over the internet after watching his wife SKYPE with his granddaughter. Researching various potential options led to the test site in Reno. There are facilities that offer off site visits; but none that offer the ability to visit from anywhere in the world.
Sheriff Gary Schaffer said, “I am excited about this new technology and pleased to be the first in the country to contract with Rob Avery of iWebVisit.com to offer this service. First and foremost, it will benefit our officer’s safety by very rarely moving inmates throughout the facility for visits and at the same time generating revenue to offset expenses and “save the taxpayer’s money.” It will also make visits easier for the average person as they can visit from anywhere for a small fee and save the related costs and expenses of driving to the correctional center.”
