CAPE MAY – A gay former Cape May police officer agreed to settle his discrimination suit against the city Sept. 19 for $369,000, NJ.com reports.
Steve Pascal, hired by the Cape May Police Department in 2002, alleged he was subjected to anti-gay slurs by fellow officers and members of the public, as well as threatened by citizens.
According to the report, Pascal was fired on Aug. 16, 2013 after the department filed disciplinary charges against him for failing to follow proper procedure while investigating a two-vehicle collision.
Cape May Council is set to vote Sept. 20 whether to approve the $369,000 payment, The Press of Atlantic City reports.
Should the payment be approved, Pascal would receive $193,000, while his attorney would get the rest. Cape May would pay $50,000, according to The Press of Atlantic City. The town’s insurer, the Atlantic County Joint Insurance Fund, would pay the rest.
In agreeing to the settlement, Cape May would admit no wrongdoing.
