There’s an electrifying buzz going around Cape May Stage these days as the new Artistic Director, Roy Steinberg, announces the Equity company’s 2009 season.
The schedule a season opening award-winning musical comedy, a recent Pulitzer Prize winning play, a Tony award winning play, and two plays that recently received nominations as the ‘Play of the Year’ on Broadway.
• May 20 – June 20: Souvenir, a musical comedy about Florence Foster Jenkins, a society lady who was a phenomenon in the 30s and 40s for singing so badly that she became a huge success.
“American Idol” owes its existence to people like Florence Foster Jenkins!
• June 24 – July 18: Say Goodnight Gracie, traces the 20th century through the hilarious lens of centenarian George Burns.
• July 22 – August 29: Social Security, by Andrew Bergman, the Writer of Blazing Saddles, is a story about a Manhattan gallery owner couple trying to impress a world-class artist who is coming to dinner.
Sept. 2 – 26: Visiting Mr. Green, a poignant comedy about learning tolerance. An elderly Jewish widower on Manhattan’s Upper West Side develops a surprising friendship and learns something about the world and challenges some of his own beliefs in this uplifting play.
• Sept. 30 – Oct. 24: Proof, David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, which was made into a feature film in 2005.
• Oct. 28 – Nov. 28: Master Harold and the Boys, by South African playwright, Athol Fugard. Plans to have Emmy-nominated actors from Los Angeles are underway to join the cast in this story of two waiters preparing for a dance competition in a South African teashop, and their relationship with the owner’s son.
• Dec. 2 – 31: O. Henry Christmas, two musical one-act plays that celebrate faith, hope, and sacrifice.
