CREST HAVEN – There were few children in the crowd of veterans Nov. 11 as Cape May County marked the day with wreaths and speeches, the singing of the national anthem, “God Bless America,” and playing of “Taps” by a Coast Guard recruit musician after a three-volley salute.
A chill wind swept across the Veterans Cemetery where each grave was adorned with a new American flag. A flame of patriotism kindled a spirit among the crowd that made the event solemn and unifying.
Illness kept Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton from the ceremony for the first time in 40 years, according to Vice-Director Leonard Desiderio, who took his place.
U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, (R-2nd) and Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) spoke of the valor and dedication of those who served. Van Drew noted some recent legislation introduced that would assist veterans residing in state-run nursing homes to get free rides to physicians’ offices.
Joseph Bisbing, Cape May County American Legion commander, addressed fellow veterans, noting he felt he was “preaching to the choir” to those who served.
Capt. Owen Gibbons, commanding officer, Coast Guard Training Center Cape May recounted how, on a weekly basis, young recruits report to the base to begin their military training and service, and the responsibilities that carries.
Retired Navy Force Master Chief Stan Crowley again headed the group of veterans who assisted in the placement of tri-colored wreaths from numerous veterans’ organizations.
The invocation was delivered by Johnnie Walker, Adjutant, Disabled American Veterans, Department of New Jersey.
The Benediction was delivered by Jim Scanlon, Executive Committee, American Legion, Department of New Jersey.
The flags that adorned veterans’ graves were placed by scout organizations, Elks and veterans Nov. 5.
Cape May County – I’d like to suggest to the Herald that they leverage spout offs draw and replace some of the ads for their paper with a few paid ads that you probably can charge a little extra for. Lots of people…
