Cape May County Library Renovations Have Begun

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE – A temporary fence has been erected around the main branch of Cape May County Library at 30 W. Mechanic St. The renovation of the building has started, and is expected to last nine months.
According to Deborah Poillon, library director, the work will include a new roof, new front steps and columns, new sidewalks, a reading room addition, a larger teen area, study rooms and an expanded Technology Learning Center (TLC).
The process will mean some inconvenience for patrons.
Throughout the work, the library will remain open during regular hours most of the time. It is possible that certain areas, or the entire building, may be closed occasionally, she noted.
The front entrance will close Nov. 2. Patrons should follow signs to the side entrances.
The book drop is available in the parking lot behind the library building, next to the loading dock.
During renovations to the front of the library, there will be no handicapped access to the building. The seven other branches are handicapped accessible.
Parking will be more difficult during renovation, due to the many construction vehicles and equipment necessary for the work.
It may be best to schedule visits for evenings and weekends when the area will be less congested.
“We are excited that the renovations are finally underway and apologize for any inconvenience,” Poillon said.
