Cape May 5.10.2006

By Rick Racela

Everything is in bloom over at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, and if you haven’t been there in a while I highly recommend making a visit.
They have a couple of special exhibits up at the moment, one honoring “Decoration Day,” which is our Memorial Day’s ancestor, and another commemorating Mother’s Day.
Both exhibits are included in daily house tours of the Physick Estate, which cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. While you’re there, stroll the grounds, which look especially exquisite at this time of year.
I’d also encourage you to dine at the estate’s tearoom, now open for the season and serving delicious luncheons and afternoon snacks in an authentic Victorian setting.
Call 884-5404 for tickets, reservations, and general information.

It’s peak season not only for flowers, but for birds as well! This weekend the World Series of Birding returns to town.
Although it is too late to register for the official competition, there is a follow-up event I wanted to share with you. Rick from “Ranger Rick Magazine” will be on the Congress Hall Lawn from noon to 2 p.m. on May 14 as part of the Cape May Youth Birders Club program.
This is the day after the World Series and the peak of migration, so there will be a lot to talk about, and Rick is even planning a few fun quizzes with prizes. Visit www.crossleybirds.com for more information.

While you’re out and about this week, take a stroll down the Washington Street Mall. The merchants are hosting their Spring Sidewalk Sale starting tomorrow through Sunday.

Don’t forget that the first annual “Friends of VIM” Beef ‘N Beer will be held on Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the Windrift Hotel and Cocktail Lounge at 80th Street and the Beach in Avalon. Tickets are available prior to the event and at the door for a donation of $25.
Friends of VIM is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to support and promote Volunteers in Medicine of Cape May County. VIM provides free medical care for citizens of the county who have no health insurance or who are under-insured.  The VIM clinic is located on Route 9 in Cape May Courthouse.
This year’s Beef ‘N Beer has been generously supported by Mr. R.J. Soens of Avalon Real Estate.
Mr. George Reichert, Mr. Peter Mustico and the staff of the Windrift Hotel have gone above and beyond to make this event possible.
The event will feature a full buffet dinner featuring roast beef sandwiches, all the fixings and your choice of house wine or draft beer.
Ongoing entertainment will highlight a variety of live acoustic guitarists and vocalists from the South Jersey area, including Patty Blee, Matt Portella,  Jim Maher, Bob Anderson, Danny Barry, Chris Morana and the duo of Sandy Sofroney and Mike Mormando.
The evening will also include a 50-50 and door prizes to be awarded throughout the event.
To purchase tickets, please contact either Marcy Lefevre at 368-6787, Micki Goldberg at 463-3529 or Stu Hartman at 675-0472. I hope you will support this important cause.

The Great Cape May Footrace is coming up, and I hope you’re in training. The race is on May 20.
I’ll share more details about registration next week, but I thought I would remind you so perhaps you’ll be inspired to lace up your sneakers and hit the road running.
In the meantime, if you would like to participate as a runner or as a volunteer (needed to act as road guards and to hand out water to runners), please call the Chamber Office and speak with Megan Hutton, 884-5508 x103.
That’s the news for this week. We’re heading into the busy event season, and I urge you to send your news to me with at least two weeks’ notice to guarantee inclusion in this space.
Simply call me at (973) 271-1088 or email herald.events@gmail.com. Thanks for reading!
