Blood shortage prompts Ocean City blood drive

By On Deck Staff

Ocean City and the American Red Cross have partnered to host a City wide blood drive on Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Ocean City Civic Center, Sixth and the Boardwalk. Local residents, groups and businesses are urged to take the time to donate.
“Nine out of ten people need blood at some point in their lives,’’ said Health and Senior Services commissioner Heather Howard. “Yet, at most times during the year, the state has less than a two-day supply of blood.”
“A single donation can save up to three lives,” continues Howard. “Blood is needed every day to perform surgeries and to treat injuries and illnesses so I urge New Jersey residents to donate blood not just this month, but year-round.’’
To donate blood through the American Red Cross, individuals must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, have not donated in the last 56 days, and be in general good health. All blood types are needed however there is a critical need for Type O blood.
Appointments for the blood drive are preferred but walk’in’s are always welcome. To make an appointment, call 525-9363 or sign up at the City Hall Reception Area, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For more information and eligibility requirements, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE or visit www.pleasegiveblood.org.
