Bacon Brothers in Ocean City

By On Deck Staff

Film star Kevin Bacon and his brother, Michael, a talented musician and composer, will bring the Bacon Brothers to the Ocean City Music Pier on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 8 p.m.
Perhaps no other band has realized more mileage out of the element of surprise than the Bacon Brothers. Through countless performances and five albums, surprising people is something they excel in since forming the duo 11 years ago.
People were skeptical at first thinking the band was a vanity group for a movie star. But long before Kevin became a household name in such hit films as Footloose and A Few Good Men, he was writing songs and playing percussion in Philadelphia with his brother’s band and other groups.
The brothers are life-long musicians.
Michael, nine years older than Kevin, has enjoyed a successful career as a performer and Emmy winning documentary and feature film composer.
In the early 80s, as Kevin’s acting career began to blossom, the Bacon brothers lived together in the same Manhattan building where they worked on songs together when time permitted.
As the years passed, the Brothers formed a band to showcase their original songs.
At first Michael wrote the music and Kevin supplied the lyrics. Under Michael’s guidance, Kevin became a talented composer and now contributes the majority of the music for the band’s original songs.
With their core backing of drummer/percussionist Frank Vilardi, bass guitarist, Paul Guzzone and multi instrumentalist, Ira Siegel, augmented by keyboard/organist, Charlie Giordano, the Brothers produced their latest album, White Knuckles.
They will play songs from the new album and Bacon Brothers classics at the Music Pier.
The Bacon Brothers performed in Ocean City five years ago to a full house and critical acclaim.
“Their show was well received by the audience. It was a very enjoyable night,” recalls city publicist, Mark Soifer
The band has given the talented brothers an outlet for the work they love to do and that is apparent in their spirited performances.
For his part, Kevin is more than eager to arrange his busy film schedule to make time for the band which continues to grow in popularity.
“I love to play and I love to play live,” says Kevin. “If you have songs inside, it’s hard not to want to get them out. That’s what it comes down to. And if the songs keep coming, we’ll keep playing them.”
The Bacon Brothers concert is a fundraiser for the Ocean City Education Foundation with Ocean City Home Bank the presenting sponsor.
The newly established Foundation funds scholarships and other programs within the local school district.
Proceeds from the event will be used toward the Foundation’s mission to enhance and expand enrichment opportunities for students.
Tickets are $30, available on line at www.ocnj.us or at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave., call 609-525-9300.
