The Women’s Civic Club of Stone Harbor will be having their 59th Annual Antique Show to help raise money for club activities and charities.
The show will take place on Friday, July 11 from 1-7 p.m. and Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Stone Harbor Elementary School on 93rd and 3rd avenues. Quality antiques from dealers on the East Coast will be shown.
Civic Club President Virginia Maslin said, “We hope a lot of people will come to browse, or buy, or both to help the civic club and support its charities.”
The antique dealers coming to this year’s show are expected to have valuable antiques. The show is being called a “revitalized antique show.”
The Women’s Civic Club of Stone Harbor has been around since 1913, was re-established after the Great Nor’easter of 1962 and still lives on today with over 170 members.
The club continues to serve the community through its programs and fundraisers. Organizations in the area such as the Garden Club, Lions Club 10K run and Keeping in Touch hold their meetings at the Civic Club House building free of charge. The Civic Club also donates to local charities and is planning on donating a paver in honor of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the VFW Post on 122nd Street.
The club raises money by renting out the center for weddings and parties, and also through their three major fundraisers.
The first of the summer was the Annual Fashion Show and Card Partywhich was a big success with a very good turnout.
The next is the Antique Show on July 11 and July 12.
The third is the Shrimpwhich Sale, which will be held on Sept. 20 and 21 at the Club House during the Wings and Water Festival. Shrimpwhiches are sold for $5, with proceeds benefiting the club and its activities.
Other events at the club this summer include the general meeting on July 15 at 9:30 a.m., which includes a continental breakfast. David Thierman from Esquire and Jeanne Eselle, Vice President of Meryll Lynch will speak on tax, estate and financial planning.
There will be a covered dish luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 11:30 a.m. with antique dealer Arthur Schwerdt who will appraise one item for each attendee free of charge.
Everyone attending will bring a favorite dish or casserole to be shared.
The club is also planning a free children’s Pajama Story Time, where stories will be read to two groups of children (up to three years, and four to nine years). Milk and cookies will be served. It’s open to the public. Details will follow.
All of these events are open to members and guests free of charge.
The final meeting for members will be a luncheon on Sept. 16 at the Golden Inn.
The club has had a strong presence in the community of Stone Harbor for almost a century and it continues to live by the principles it was founded upon.
Their mission is, “To support and promote the enhancement of the Borough of Stone Harbor through charitable and civic activity by fundraising assistance, public awareness and education.”
Everyone is welcome to join, not just those living in Stone Harbor. Those interested can apply for membership at the club and pay the $25 per year membership fee, upon acceptance.
