West Wildwood Mayor in Critical Condition

By Deborah McGuire

WEST WILDWOOD — Dr. Herbert “Chuck” Frederick, 61, mayor of West Wildwood, was critically injured in an accident at his Venice Avenue home on Mon., July 18. Frederick received serious head injuries in a fall from a ladder.
“We don’t know why he was up there,” said Chris Ridings, Frederick’s administrative assistant. “There was no indication of why he was up there. He was probably doing a repair.”
“There was no foul play involved,” said Borough Commissioner Gerard McNamara.
According to McNamara, Frederick was taken to Cooper University Medical Center by helicopter. “The Wildwood EMS took him to Maxwell Field,” said McNamara, “and he was taken to Cooper.”
Frederick’s condition is critical but stable. “They say the first 24 to 48 hours are the most critical,” said McNamara. “He has not lost consciousness and he’s not in a coma,” he added.
Frederick, a life-long resident of the borough has been its mayor since 2008. He is a retired school principal, as well as a former Cape May County Freeholder. As mayor, Frederick survived a recall vote in 2010, as well as a court challenge.
“The borough is running smoothly,” said McNamara. “The office is running fine.”
“Chuck has nothing but the best intentions for this island,” said McNamara. “We all have him in our prayers.”
