GOSHEN — Middle Township police have identified a man killed in a head-on motor vehicle crash that occurred on Route 47 at 5 p.m., Nov. 7. The driver of the other vehicle has been charged with multiple offenses, including DWI.
According to Capt. John Edwards, Robert Pitts, 65, of Villas, succumbed to injuries he sustained when his Ford Taurus was struck head-on by a Dodge Charger driven by Robert DeMarco, 29, of Williamstown.
Police responded to multiple calls reporting the crash. Officers who responded discovered a a head-on collision, with both vehicles resting in the southbound lane.
An initial investigation revealed DeMarco’s vehicle was traveling north on Rte. 47 when it left the northbound lane of traffic and struck the Taurus, which was traveling south. A witness to the accident stated the Charger was traveling north on Rte. 47 from the Rio Grande area.
Responding to the accident were emergency personnel from Cape May Court House and Goshen fire companies. Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to extricate Pitts from his vehicle. He was transported via Atlanticare Medic 9 to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center’s trauma center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Edwards told the Herald because of inclement weather, Pitts was unable to be transported via helicopter.
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Crash Unit responded to the scene and assisted Middle Township Major Crimes Unit detectives with the investigation.
DeMarco has been charged with DWI, Reckless Driving and Failure to Maintain Lane.
