COURT HOUSE – The identity of a woman killed when she was struck by a Sea Isle City Public Works vehicle as it picked up debris from Hurricane Sandy has been revealed.
According to county Prosecutor Robert Taylor and city police Chief Thomas D’Intino, Bernice Pasquarello, 69, of Medford, was struck by a Public Works vehicle as she was walking north on the city’s promenade near 52nd Street, Nov. 24.
The fatality occurred during the same weekend as the city’s first annual holiday extravaganza, which ran Nov. 23 through Nov. 24. The two-day event attracted residents and visitors alike by offering seasonal activities such as ice skating, a tree lighting, Santa Claus and carolers. All events were held at Excursion Park, JFK Boulevard and the Promenade.
The driver of the vehicle, Andrew Mattern, 33, an employee of the Public Works Department, was parked on the promenade while picking up debris from Hurricane Sandy.
The promenade, which had been closed to pedestrian traffic to allow for cleanup after the storm, was open, Taylor told the Herald.
Mattern was alerted by coworkers that he had driven by debris and was asked to return. He reentered the vehicle and backed up, fatally striking Pasquarello.
The victim was pronounced at the scene.
Charges have not been filed. The case remains under investigation by the county Prosecutor’s Office.
