RIO GRANDE – A 60-year-old Wildwood man was killed, May 17, while attempting to cross Fulling Mill Road on foot.
Middle Township Police Department said the pedestrian, identified as Mark Bowers, was attempting to walk across Fulling Mill Road (CR 654) in Rio Grande at around 6:40 a.m. when he was struck by a motor vehicle travelling south.
Police said Bowers was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the motor vehicle, whose name was not provided, was not injured. The accident caused Fulling Mill Road to be closed for four hours.
According to sources known at the Herald, Bowers was living in a storage unit on Fulling Mill Road and working for Habitat for Humanity. He was a regular visitor to the Branches in Rio Grande, and described as a “very nice guy.” Local agencies were attempting to contact a relative. It was also reported that he was keeping cats.
An investigation is ongoing by the Middle Township Police Major Crimes Unit, Middle Township Police Crash Team, and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
Assisting with the crash was the Rio Grande Fire Department, Inspira Medical Services, and Cape May County Road Department.
