By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

SEA ISLE CITY — The county hazardous material (HAZMAT) team was called to the Sea Isle City Public Works Yard shortly after 8 a.m., Wednesday, April 21 for chemical reaction in a trash truck.
According to Sea Isle City Fire Chief Frank Edwardi, the trash truck made a pick-up at a hair and nail salon on JFK boulevard; shortly after the workers noticed a gas coming from the trash.
The truck was taken to the public works yard and an ambulance was called because one of the workers was short of breath. Additional resources were also called in from the Seaville and Ocean View fire departments as well as the Upper Township Rescue Squad.
All three men were transported to Cape Regional Medical Center as a precaution, Edwardi said.
The gas was determined to be from a chemical reaction and not a hazardous material. Edwardi said there was no need to evacuate anyone and the state did not need to be notified of the incident.
Police issued the following:
On Wednesday April 21, at 7:49 a.m. police responded to the 200 block of John F. Kennedy Boulevard for what appeared to be a chemical reaction in the back of a municipal garbage truck.
The Sea Isle City Fire Department along with the Ocean View Fire Department and the Cape May County Hazmat Team responded.
The garbage truck was moved to a secure area at the Department of Public Works for further investigation.
It was discovered that bottles of acetone and muriatic acid, along with bleach and other chemicals, were placed in the trash and reacted.
Three Department of Public Works employees who were manning the truck were sent down to Cape Regional Medical Center for evaluation.
