UPDATE: State Police Thurs., Dec. 30 said driver Suzy Boehm was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and failure to stop at a stop sign. The charges are not criminal, police said. They are motor vehicle charges.
SEAVILLE – One woman was flown to the hospital and police nabbed another trying to escape through the woods following a hit-and-run accident Wednesday afternoon.
Antoinette Pellegrini, 78, of Ocean View was flown to AtlantiCare Medical Center in Atlantic City after her car was stuck near the intersection of West Katherine Avenue and Route 9 at 2:55 p.m., State Police said. Her gold Lincoln sustained heavy damage, enough to deploy her airbags, and she was complaining of chest pain, Woodbine troopers said. She was alone in her vehicle.
Meanwhile, Suzy Boehm, 21, of Seaville was uninjured. Police said she was driving a 2005 white Acura on Katherine Avenue when she collided with Pellegrini, who was southbound on Route 9.
Boehm failed to stop after the accident, police said. In fact, she kept driving until her car stop working on Route 50. Then, she got out and started walking into the woods, they said.
Cops followed her tracks and found her. Charges, they said, are pending. The incident remains under investigation along with a witness’ claim that there was a passenger in Boehm’s vehicle that vanished after the collision.
Police said Boehm’s kept driving even after her airbags deployed. Cops said her car had serious front-end damage. However, they said the airbags on the passenger side of her car were still intact when the found the vehicle, so whether or not she had a passenger with her remained a mystery shortly after the accident when the Herald talked with troopers.
There is a stop sign at the intersection of Route 9 and Katherine Avenue. Police are trying to determine if weather conditions may have played a role in the incident or if Boehm failed to stop or poorly attempted to merge into oncoming traffic on Route 9.
The Seaville Fire Department and Upper Township Rescue also responded to the scene.
