STRATHMERE – Twins, Nicole Crudele and Michael Crudele, 18, escaped when the SUV they were in plummeted from Corson’s Inlet Bridge on Ocean Drive Tues., Feb. 1, around 12.55 p.m.
Troopers at Woodbine State Police station said the two suffered minor injuries but escaped on their own from a Ford sports utility vehicle, an Expedition crashed through a guard rail into the chilly water.
Theirs was the only car involved in the incident and, according to police, it went through the guardrail and landed in about 15 feet of water below the overpass.
Both Crudeles are from Sea Isle City, are seniors at Ocean City High School, and are niece and nephew of Freeholder Vice-Director and Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio.
Cause of the accident remains unknown, but the bridge was closed as repairs were made to the severely rusted guardrail that was to be replaced in an ongoing repair project.
Nicole Crudele was driving at the time, State Police said.
After the crash, the Crudeles swam to safety. They were aided on the beach by local residents until rescue units arrived.
Both were transported by Ocean City Fire Rescue to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division for non-life threatening injuries.
The vehicle was recovered from the water by State Police T.E.A.M.S. Unit, Strathmere Fire Company, New Jersey State Park Police and the Cape May County Road Department.
The State Police Marine Bureau, Sea Isle City Police, Ocean City Police and Ocean City Fire Department also responded and assisted at the scene.
Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster responded to the scene to survey the damage and ordered the bridge closed pending a through inspection and repairs.
