SWAINTON— Police are investigating a collision involving a motorcycle and a sport-utility-vehicle that occurred here on Route 9 and Avalon Boulevard on Saturday, Aug 8 at 9:48 p.m.
According to police, the crash occurred when a vehicle, driven by William Howells Jr. of Wildwood, had started to make a left turn from southbound Route 9 onto Avalon Blvd. A motorcycle, driven by Richard Metzler of Newtonville along with a passenger, Lizzette Astasio of Hammonton, was entering the intersection from the opposite direction on Route 9 when the vehicle driven by Howells had turned in front of it. The motorcycle struck the vehicle and both Metzler and Astasio were ejected as a result.
Both riders of the motorcycle suffered serious injuries and were later flown to Atlantic Regional Medical Center by South Star and Medivac 5 after being treated at the scene by members of both Middle Township Ambulance Corps and Rio Grande Rescue squad along with Medic 5. The driver of the sport utility vehicle, William Howells Jr., was not injured and was charged with careless driving.
Avalon Police and Cape May County Sheriffs departments assisted with diverting traffic on Avalon Blvd.
The Court House Fire Department also responded.
