UPDATE: Scallop Boat Captain’s Death Ruled Accidental

LOWER TOWNSHIP — The Southern State Regional Medical Examiner’s office has ruled the death of Alton Whealton, 49, of Alliance, N.C. an accidental drowning following an autopsy that was performed at Shore Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 29, according to State Police.
Whealton was the captain of a scallop boat the Lilly Belle, of New Bern, N.C. According to state police, Whealton had returned from a ten day fishing trip on Friday, March 26th and was docked at Atlantic Cape Fisheries in Cape May.
Whealton’s lifeless body was found Saturday morning floating in the water near Lund’s Fisheries.
The circumstances surrounding how Whealton drowned are still under investigation. State police said it’s possible Whealton slipped while attempting to board the Lilly Belle.
