UPDATE: One Hospitalized After Car Strikes Boom Truck

By Deborah McGuire

DEL HAVEN — A boom truck was struck by a car in a Sept. 5 accident on Bayshore Road.
According to police reports, the accident occurred at 1:33 p.m. when an Eastern Auto Warehouse Distributor vehicle, driven by Robert Taylor, 74, of Court House was traveling west on Bayshore Road and struck a boom truck parked on the right side of the roadway, servicing a street light.
David B. Wigglesworth, 47, of Mays Landing was seated in the cab of the boom truck, owned by American Lighting and Signalization. Vernon Powell, 24, of Tabernacle was working in the raised boom at the time of the crash.
Traffic was rerouted from Bayshore Road for approximately one hour while emergency personnel responded to the scene.
“I heard the smash and the bang,” said Joe Quinn, who lives near the site of accident. “It’s a dangerous road.”
Quinn said the area where the accident occurred has seen its share of accidents in the past few weeks.
“In the last six weeks there were at least six accidents,” he said. “There’s no lighting, no sidewalks. They need to do something. This summer it seemed worse.”
Quinn’s wife, Jennifer, said vehicles driving down the road often “speed down here like crazy.”
Taylor was airlifted to the trauma center of Atlanticare Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries he sustained to his head and pelvic area. Wigglesworth and Powell were not injured as a result of the crash.
Responding to the scene were members of Green Creek Fire Department, Middle Township EMS, Middle Township police and Medic 5.
The crash remains under investigation by Ptlm. James D’Alonzo.
