UPDATE: Campground Drowning Victim Identified as Philadelphia Teen

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

SOUTH SEAVILLE — A 14 year-old Philadelphia teen drowned Sunday night in a pond at the Pine Haven campground, State Police said.
Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman, said John Toribio, 14, was swimming with a boy and a girl about 8:15 p.m. when the two friends saw Toribio flailing about as if he were in distress.
Jones said the two friends thought Toribio was fooling around and they left. When they looked back they didn’t see him. Jones said they thought maybe he came out on the other side of the pond.
Two hours later the boy Toribio was with told his mother that Toribio was missing and possibly drowned, Jones said. The woman called police about 10:30 p.m.
Troopers from the Woodbine station arrived to find no sign of the boy and his clothing was still on the beach.
The Ocean View Fire Department was called to the scene to light up the area while the state police dive team attempted to located the teen’s body.
Jones said state police divers found the teens body 35 feet from shore in about 15 feet of water at 12:45 a.m.
No charges have been filed, Jones said. The drowning remains under investigation.
