BELLEPLAIN — A 61-year-old hunter from Maurice River Township fell about 20 feet after he tried to climb down from a tree stand, when the branch beneath him broke Thursday, Nov 20. about 5:15 p.m.
The hunter, Jim Groome, was rescued by Belleplain Fire Department and Belleplain Emergency Corps a half mile in the woods.
Groome told State Police from Woodbine Station that he used his cell phone to contact a friend with whom he had been hunting. That friend then called 9-1-1.
The Bellplain Communications center received a call around 6:55 p.m. The accident happened off Timberswamp Road. The victim was unable to feel his legs and arms, according to a radio report.
Emergency responders located Groome about a half mile down a dirt road.
The victim was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City by Belleplain and Medic 2 with injuries to his right hip and right shoulder.
Trooper Justin Green investigated the accident.
