According to New Jersey State Police, the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer was southbound in the left lane at 4:38 a.m. when the vehicle traveled over the berm and struck a tree in the wood line.
The driver, Jorge Vergara, 24, of Villas was pronounced dead at 7:19 a.m.
The front seat passenger, Jose Rivera, 26, of Villas was pronounced dead at 7:20 a.m.
The rear seat passenger, Jonathan Barrientos-Ubaldo, 24, of Rio Grande, who is now 25, sustained a broken ankle. There was no report of alcohol or drug use, according to Trooper Alejandro Goez of the State Police Public Affairs Office.
A check of the State Police fatal accident data for Cape May County surfaced the date of the accident, previously unreported, which prompted the Sept. 26 inquiry by the Herald.
