Two Men Injured After Being Hit by Motor Vehicle in Rio Grande

By Herald Staff

RIO GRANDE — Two men were injured Dec. 15 when they were struck by a vehicle on Route 47 at Fifth Street.
According to Middle Township police, on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at about 7:14 p.m., police communications received a “9-1-1” call that a pedestrian had just been struck by a passing motorist, in the southbound lane of Route 47.
Members from the Rio Grande Rescue Squad, AtlanticCare Paramedics and patrol units responded to the scene, to find George Whitmore, 65, of Rio Grande, lying in the southbound lane of Route 47, just east of the intersection of Fifth Street. Whitmore was flown to the Trauma Center of AtlantiCare Medical Center, with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
Upon arriving on-scene, officers found that a second pedestrian, Calvin Freeman, 54, of Rio Grande, also had been struck while attempting to prevent Whitmore from walking into traffic in that area.
The driver, Michael Bradley, 21, of Court House, said it was dark and he never saw either man attempting to cross the roadway as he traveled south on Route 47. Bradley said he immediately stopped his vehicle when he heard the impact of the victims with his vehicle.
This case remains under investigation by Cpl. Mike Elias and Detective Clint Stocker of the Major Crimes Unit. Officers from the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department, who were passing through the area, assisted with traffic control in that busy stretch of Route 47, with a high volume of traffic at that time.
