DENNISVILLE – A Dennis Township work crew in a dump truck loaded with gravel was fixing potholes on Gracetown Road in the vicinity of Dennisville Road, March 25 at approximately 8 a.m. At the same time, and in proximity behind the dump truck, a school bus was picking up children en route to the elementary school.
According to Sgt. Steve Evlin, of the New Jersey State Police Woodbine Station, “The driver (name and other details not disclosed) of the dump truck which was pouring gravel into potholes on the road as a road repair assignment, backed into the school bus. The driver stated he had looked into his rear view mirror but did not see the bus.”
The State Police Woodbine Barracks dispatched Trooper Kyle Morley to assist and investigate the accident that knocked the hood out of alignment and off of the school bus.
A couple of children complained of minor injuries at the scene and all children were taken to Cape Regional Medical Center in Court House for examination and were released.
Ten children were on the bus and none were injured. “We immediately followed the protocols we have in place when such an accident takes place,” said Superintendent Mark Miller, of Dennis School District. “We sent our school nurse to the scene of the accident, immediately notified all parents, and then had all the children taken to the hospital to ensure they were all OK, even if they had not complained of an injury or other concern.”
State Police will finalize their investigation and then file a report on the incident. “We are very happy and blessed that all the children were OK and that this accident did not turn out to be anything more serious,” concluded Miller.
