Three of Four Dogs Rescued from Underwater Vehicle, Driver Charged with DWI

ERMA- On September 30th, the Lower Township Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle that had driven into a fresh water pond off of Cresse Lane in Erma at approximately 9 p.m.
Upon arrival, Officer Michael Kennedy ascertained that the two occupants had escaped from the vehicle and were standing on the shore.
The driver and passenger advised police that four of their dogs were still trapped in the vehicle.
Officer Kennedy then entered the water and smashed out a side window and entered the vehicle to extricate the animals from inside the cab and cap area of the vehicle.
Three of the dogs were retrieved safely and one dog had drowned prior to Kennedy reaching the animal.
After the rescue and upon further investigation the driver of the vehicle, identified as John Kahora, 47 years of age of Westfield Avenue in Erma, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
The case was investigated by Officer Jennifer Anzelone, Officer Doug Whitten and Special Officer Michael Kennedy.
