Teen Struck By Truck in Swainton, Suffered Severe Leg Injury

By Herald Staff

SWAINTON— On Thursday July 30, 2009 Middle Township Police received a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident at the Big Timber Lake Campground. It was initially reported to be a pedestrian crash with the victim being trapped under a garbage truck. Upon arrival of Patrolman Armondo Jones it was determined that the victim, a 16-year-old juvenile, was no longer trapped under the vehicle.
The Middle Township Ambulance Corps responded to the scene along with Medic 5. Both treated the victim at the scene and transported the subject to Cape Regional Medical Center for further treatment.
Initial investigation shows that the victim was an employee of the campground and had stepped from the back step of the garbage truck driven by Paul Pearson of North Cape May. After doing so it appears that the driver of a second vehicle, a pickup truck also used for garbage and driven by Robert Reitz, had not come to a complete stop behind the victim. This caused the front bumper of the pickup truck to strike the victim, pinning him between that vehicle and the garbage truck. The victim, who is unidentified due to his age, suffered a severe leg injury.
Motor vehicle charges are pending the outcome of the investigation by Patrolman David Hagan of the Patrol Division. Also assisting is Detective Kenneth Martin of the Middle Township Major Crimes Unit.
