WILDWOOD — Wildwood Police said a car full of teens turned a corner too fast and took out a hydrant at Ocean and Lincoln avenues Friday around 1:30 p.m. No one was injured, according to Lt. Rich Adair. The driver could be issued a summons, he said, adding that speed was likely a factor in the crash.
Police declined to release the names of those involved, saying all were juveniles. The teens are students from Wildwood Catholic High School and were returning to the school after attending a peer leadership-type seminar, police said.
The car, a white BMW, sustained damage to the front passenger side and was towed from the scene. The hydrant was knocked out of the ground and hit a nearby building. Adair said both the car and hydrant did what they were supposed to.
“The kids were wearing their seatbelts and with a high performance car, it sustained the impact well,” he said. “The hydrant simply broke loose from the curb.”
Local fire, police and EMS responded.
