Student on Field Trip Killed in Ferris Wheel Accident

WILDWOOD — An 11-year-old girl sustained fatal injuries in an accident on Morey’s Mariner’s Landing Pier’s Ferris wheel Fri., June 3. According to police, Abiah Jones, a student at Pleasant Tech Academy, Pleasantville, was on a field trip with her class when the accident occurred.
Wildwood police and fire departments received a call at 12:32 p.m. for a medical assist. Upon arrival, first responders as well as Morey’s Pier staff members were attending to Jones.
A helicopter was called for to transport Abiah to a trauma center, however due to the extensive injuries she sustained it was decided that her condition was too critical and the helicopter was recalled. She was transported by ambulance to Cape Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 1:14 pm.
Morey’s Pier issued a statement saying, “Approximately 12:30 pm on June 3, an incident occurred on Morey’s Mariner’s Landing Pier located at Schellenger Avenue and the Boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ. The incident occurred on the Ferris wheel and involved a young female. The exact cause of the incident has not been determined, but at this time it does not appear to be mechanical in nature. The incident is being investigated. The Morey staff and family offer our thoughts and prayers to the family.”
Jones was visiting the pier with several classmates and chaperones, according to po-lice.
Members of the city’s police and fire departments extended similar condolences to the victim’s family. The investigation continues by members of Wildwood Police Department Detective Division and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
Morey’s Organization has notified the state Department of Community Affairs, Carnival Amusement inspectors who are conducting their separate investigation into the accident.
