STONE HARBOR – Stone Harbor Police responded to the beach block of 96th Street for a single car motor vehicle accident involving injury May 7 at approximately 7:16 a.m.
When police arrived on the scene, the driver, identified as Avelino Rivera, was found sitting behind the steering wheel bleeding from the head. Rivera’s head had made contact with the windshield of the car and the driver’s airbag had deployed. The crash caused significant damage to the seawall, knocking the bulkhead approximately two feet into the sand dune. The vehicle was towed from the scene based on the damage received.
Due to Rivera’s injuries, he was subsequently flown by NJSP Medivac helicopter to the Atlantic City Medical Center. A search warrant to draw blood at the hospital was authorized by Judge Belasco.
Rivera was charged on summonses with DUI, Careless Driving and Failing to Wear a Seatbelt. A June court date in Stone Harbor Municipal Court was scheduled.
The investigation was assisted by Stone Harbor Fire Department and Rescue Squad. The case was investigated by Officer David Hartzell and DSG Robert Walker.
