‘South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance’ Announces Ceremony to Mark Change in Law

By Herald Staff

VINELAND – The “South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance” announces a formal ceremony to mark the changes in New Jersey’s motor vehicle law that regulates the safe crossing of a pedestrian at intersections and marked crosswalks. The law was changed this year to honor Casey Feldman age 21, of Springfield Pennsylvania.
On July 17, 2009, Feldman was struck and killed by a motor vehicle while walking in a crosswalk in Ocean City New Jersey.
Feldman’s parents were instrumental in working with the NJ Legislature to amend New Jersey statute 39:4-36 which has been changed and now requires motorists to come to a complete stop and remain stopped while pedestrians are crossing in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
The new changes officially take effect on Thursday April 1, 2010.
The ceremony will take place at the Ocean City New Jersey city hall complex located at 861 Asbury Avenue in Ocean City NJ. At 3:00 PM on Wednesday March 31, 2010. There will be other ceremonies taking place in Newark, NJ at 9AM and Cherry Hill, NJ at 1PM.
Members of the Media are encouraged to attend this important event. The newest traffic signs showing the changes will be on display for photo opportunities.
Members of the Feldman family, local elected officials, law enforcement, and the local community will be present. Pam Fischer, Director of the “New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety” will be in attendance and will speak to the group.
The SJTSA is a non-profit government organization dedicated to education and awareness efforts in reducing injuries and deaths resulting from crashes involving motor vehicles, pedestrians bicycle and motorcycle riders. We serve Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem Counties
